"Ask lots of questions. You will quickly realise that everyone here is friendly and there is no such thing as a silly question"
What’s your background?
I always wanted to be a makeup artist, and this is where my passion was. Having trained as a makeup artist and then working in that industry for a few years, I soon realised it wasn’t a viable long-term career and I needed to consider other options. As I had been working full time, I needed to be able to change career without retraining or taking time out as I had several responsibilities I needed to keep on top of. After exploring my options, I decided that moving into administration looked to be the best route for me and I started at the bottom and worked my way up. I did a few admin roles in several different sectors and organisations before joining UKCloud in late 2017. Having an office-based job allows me to keep my weekends free so I can still enjoy spending time being a makeup artist.
What bought you to UKCloud?
At the time I was looking for a new role to expand my capability and support my personal development. I saw the Office Administrator role at UKCloud, the company was growing quickly and looking at the job description it had the right balance of new responsibilities as well as areas that would utilise my existing skills. When I came in for my interview, I saw how friendly and open the office environment was and it looked like the perfect opportunity for me to progress my career.
What work are you excited about?
I’m excited now as I have recently moved into the business operations team and this has opened a lot of new opportunities for me. I now work closely with the HR, recruitment and commercial teams. I have always had an interest in HR, so I’m keen to learn more, spend time doing research and assisting with various tasks for the team. Likewise, as the organisation continues to grow I’m excited to see how my role changes and develops.
What does your day look like? Inc. technologies
Day to day I get involved in quite a few areas. A big part of my role is supporting the culture and wellbeing at UKCloud. Whether it is supporting offsite meetings or coordinating the company benefits such as drink fridges and free fruit in the office. I also maintain the office environment whether that is managing the onsite maintenance team to ensure the office environment is maintained and improved as we grow or the daily bits and pieces like making sure the office space is clean and tidy and ready for the day. As well as this I recently obtained a first aid certification so not only can I look after the office, I can look after the people that work there. I am also getting more involved in health and safety and this is a great development opportunity for me.
What is the ambition for you and the team?
My personal ambition is to grow with the organisation, looking to the future I would like to be an Office Manager or Admin Manager and would love to study HR and gain qualifications to move into that area of business. My role at UKCloud has already supported me some way of the way in reaching that ambition. The ambition of my role is to improve the working environment for UKCloud employees and support the ongoing development of UKCloud’s Culture.
What piece of advice would you give to someone looking to join UKCloud?
The piece of advice I would give anyone joining UKCloud is to ask loads of questions. You will quickly realise that everyone here is friendly and there is no such thing as a silly question. There is a lot to learn when you first start but the support from colleagues and managers is incredible, so you soon get the hang of it all.
