Meet Jim – Software Engineer

"UKCloud is a great place to work and the work atmosphere and benefits are really good "

What is your background?

Before I got involved in software engineering, my background was in freelance web development. I studied environmental science and chemistry before decided to make a career change.

What brought you to UKCloud?

I was referred in by an existing software engineer. As soon as I stepped foot in the office I realised this was the kind of environment I wanted to work. The social aspects and team dynamics of the organisation make it a special place to work.

What work are you excited about?

Coming from a background in environmental science everything has excited me, and continue to do so.  We are always testing new tools and the development doesn’t seem to stop.  Right now, I am excited about deploying customer estate API.

What does your day to day look like?

Every day is a little bit different depending on what projects and tasks you are working on. Right now, my focus is programming in Ruby using TDD techniques. I am also testing and deploying using docker, Kubernetes and OpenShift.

What is your ambition for you and your team?

Our ambition is to move towards a more automated integration and deployment strategies. Ultimately supporting our customers vision.

What piece of advice would you give someone looking to join UKCloud?

The advice I would give would be to ask lots of questions and get involved. The people at UKCloud are really knowledgeable.  It’s a great place to work and the work atmosphere and benefits are really good.
