Meet Colin – Head of Cloud Support

"“Joining UKCloud is about doing the right thing for the UK Citizen, and saving the Tax Payer money.”"

What is your background?

I worked at a multinational technology company for many years primarily focused on service delivery and support for compliance related work. I took my first steps into the cloud market in 2012, when I joined a small cloud company that specialises in backup services.

What brought you to UKCloud?

UKCloud were called Skyscape when I first made contact. I saw what they were doing and how they were shaking up the market place. They had a unique product and were driven to improve the life of the UK citizen and at the time they were looking for a Technical Operations Manager and I was looking for my next career challenge.

What work are you excited about?

I’m excited about the pace at which UKCloud moves. In 2017 we announced two game changing initiatives; the first is already delivered, whilst the second is being developed. I believe these will save our customers a great deal of money and offer something that hasn’t been available before anywhere in the world. We will be the first.

What does your day to day look like?

I manage two teams, the NOC which provides 24/7 support for the platform and the Cloud Support Engineers who run the helpdesk and provide 1st and 2nd line support for all customer queries. The day starts with a Daily Service Review where we talk about the events over the last 12 hours and whatever is planned for the day to come. That sets the tone for my day, I will be talking to customers, managing a major incident or doing the day to day stuff of working on projects and people management. As well as this I manage a range of projects, this month we have a challenging programme to upgrade vCloud across our estate.

What is your ambition for you and your team?

Many of my team are on their first steps of a career in IT. Nothing excites me more than seeing them grow into superb engineers and letting them stretch their wings. It is very satisfying when they are promoted internally. On the other hand, these same engineers are taking calls from customers and dealing with their queries and problems. Receiving unsolicited feedback from a customer about the excellent service they have experienced is one of the things that brightens up my day.

What piece of advice would you give someone looking to join UKCloud?

Joining UKCloud isn’t about making money and wringing out every last penny of profit. It’s about doing the right thing for the UK Citizen, and saving the Tax Payer money. We are out to disrupt the market place by being different. Big enough to cope, but small enough to care.
