The Practice Director for Engineering is a key part of UKCloud Operational Leadership Team (OLT). You will have demonstrable experience helping organisations build a successful and scalable design and engineering function. You will use your expertise to develop and implement appropriate standards and processes to drive efficient engineering across the Practice. The Practice Director for Engineering leads a team of specialist IT professionals focused on creating simple and scalable solutions to complex problems via design and engineering best practice. Your goal is rapidly embed and mature a successful engineering culture within UKCloud to ensure we’re able to scale our portfolio gracefully


Key Responsibilities 

  • Responsible for determining ‘How’ design and engineering work within the Practice is done and ‘Who’ does the work 
  • Creates career development opportunities and improves the capability of the Engineering Practice 
  • Ensures effective interworking with other Practices (e.g. Design to Operate) within the Capability Lifecycle flow (e.g. strategy, deployment and operations) 
  • Accountable for pastoral care of everyone within the Engineering Practice (in conjunction with deputy directors/resource managers as appropriate) 
  • Maintains accurate team velocity through allocating story points across BAU and other categories for the wider business


Essential skills

  • Clear evidence of experience and ability to lead a successful delivery organisation 
  • Highly organised – demonstrable experience planning and managing risks and dependencies
  • Excellent and clear communicator (written, verbal and visual) – to internal and external stakeholders 
  • Experience leading teams and coaching others to adopt best practice 
  • Highly experienced with handling escalations and engaging with senior leadership 
  • Ability to lead governance activities 
  • Technical acumen to assess technical scenarios and situations, make informed decisions and be able to present back to senior leadership, peers and team with confidence and accuracy 
  • Ability to build an increasingly accurate work estimation capability supported by appropriate tracking of resource utilisation across different types of work 
  • Strong experience implementing appropriate governance assuring the quality, consistency and compliance of plans, architectures and engineering output 
  • Ability to drive behavioural change (including experience of performance management and personal development planning)
