The Practice Director for Deployment is a key part of UKCloud Operational Leadership Team (OLT). You will have demonstrable experience in Service Transition and systematically rolling out new capabilities across multiple environments. You will use your expertise to develop and implement appropriate standards and processes to drive efficient deployment capabilities across the Deployment Practice. The Practice Director for Deployment leads a team of specialist IT professionals focused on ensuring new and improved capabilities are rapidly deployed to all environments in a consistent, repeatable and quality assured way. Your goal is to drive consistency across all environments to facilitate operations and onward engineering.


Key Responsibilities 

  • Responsible for determining ‘How’ work within the Practice is done and ‘Who’ does the work 
  • Creates career development opportunities and improves the capability of the Deployment Practice 
  • Ensures effective interworking with other Practices (e.g. Design to Operate) within the Capability Lifecycle flow (e.g. strategy, engineering and operations) 
  • Accountable for pastoral care of everyone within the Deployment Practice (in conjunction with a deputy director/resource manager) 
  • Maintains accurate team velocity through allocating story points across BAU and other categories for the wider business 
  • Ensures close collaboration and co-operation with Operations as Deployments are released into production environments


Essential skills

  • Strong understanding / qualifications in Automation, Quality Assurance and/or Service Transition best practice 
  • Highly organised – demonstrable experience planning and managing risks and dependencies 
  • Excellent and clear communicator (written, verbal and visual) 
  • Experienced leading teams and coaching others to adopt best practice 
  • Highly experience with handling escalations and engaging with senior leadership
  • Ability to lead governance activities 
  • Technical acumen to assess technical scenarios and situations, make informed decisions and be able to present back to senior leadership, peers and team with confidence and accuracy 
  • Ability to build an increasingly accurate work estimation capability supported by appropriate tracking of resource utilisation across different types of work 
  • Strong experience implementing appropriate governance assuring the quality, consistency and compliance of deployment work 
  • Ability to drive behavioural change (including experience of performance management and personal development planning)
