Purpose of Role
In this newly created role, and as part of our Engineering Support function, we are looking for experience System Administration Engineers to maintain and improve our Management Platform and component business critical tools, notably monitoring, systems, database and data warehousing systems.
You will be able to understand and take the best course of action when a critical production system has an acute problem and pull priority and high value tasks as part of a Kanban team. Your exposure to an agile working environment is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain UKCloud’s business critical tools including monitoring and management platforms. Act to keep those systems available, secure and performant.
Provide 3rd Line Support for technical queries and application issues raised by internal and external Customers. Resolve these queries promptly and in line with support targets.
Actively engage with other teams to improve cross working / team knowledge. Provide Subject Matter Expert level support to internal and external customers, including leadership of technical investigations.
Input into product evaluation and selection.
Produce, maintain and share documentation for design, configuration and on-going support.
Act to script, automate and improve the consistency and efficiency of operational activity, including support for effective configuration management tools/data.
Maintain technical knowledge of current technical trends and standards.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience

Essential

  • Excellent operational and administrative knowledge of Linux Operating Systems
  • A strong understanding of datacentre technologies including Servers, Networks, Storage ideally gained through an operational support background
  • Experience of pro-active monitoring, technical administration and operational support of business-critical systems
  • An aptitude and desire to identify and automate repeatable tasks for efficiency and accuracy
  • Demonstrable skill in at least one of the following scripting languages: Python, Ruby, PowerShell, Perl.
  • Understands the importance of systems security and familiar with securing Linux based systems.

Desirable

  • Experience in working within a large-scale cloud or virtualised computing environment
  • Experience with monitoring systems (e.g. ScienceLogic, Nagios, SolarWinds, Icinga) and Protective Monitoring, SIEMs or other security aligned tools
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes, LANDesk, VMware, OpenStack, Xen/Oracle Hypervisor, Administration of Atlassian tools
